Hello to All, I hope all is well. Well, its back, YAHOO. The Gamblers Classic is a great weekend. Valerie and I started attending when we first joined our Wonderful little club. We are going for sure. I would like you to review Corvettes of Bakersfield's web site, and do your best to try and  fit this in to your schedule. Luckily, there is not a conflict with our meeting schedule. I have spoken to Dick Malley and he will be co-ordinating our caravan run to Laughlin. In the past, there has been an award for largest club participation, I think we can win that, with your support. We will talk about this at our next meeting. There will be some exciting news at our next meeting. Please do your best to attend. Thanks,     Bob

Bob, Thank you for the call this afternoon on behalf of yourself and Southwest Corvettes.  After a four year gap, we at Corvettes of Bakersfield are excited to bring back the 16th All Corvette Gambler's Classic at Laughlin.  Our weekend format mirrors that of many of our past Gambler's Classics, including the Friday night dinner show, Saturday morning poker run to the old town of Oatman on old Route 66, the Saturday car show, a live band during the Saturday events, Raffle prizes, and the Saturday evening awards presentation.  Please make your membership aware of the returning of the event and as we discussed on the phone, registering as soon as you can will help guarantee that you will have full participation in the weekends events.  We are currently at about 125 registrations received, and full participation is guaranteed to the first 300 entries.  This is explained in more detail on our Club website that I have included below.  We are very pleased with the high number of registrations since we are still still some 5 1/2 months out from the event.   You and your fellow members can view and print out the registration form as well as general information and pictures on our Club website:  http://corvettesofbakersfield.org   I tried to send these forms as attachments, but it exceeded my computer abilities. We look forward to seeing you and your Club members come April 15th, 2011.  We have had a lot of calls expressing past participants excitement that the Gambler's Classic is back, and we are glad to hear that your Club shares the same feelings.  You can't beat an All Corvette show, especially when the number of entries is in the hundreds.  We just don't get enough large Vette shows out here on the west coast. Thank you again for your interest, Steve TaylorCorvettes of Bakersfield Gambler's Classic Co-Chair661 809-6464

PRESIDENTS COLUMN

I would like to start with a big thank you for the vote of confidence allowing me to represent you as President for 2010/2011. I appreciate your support. I think we have a really strong and motivated Board of Directors for 2010. Al Barber and I have spent quite a bit of time talking about our views on the Club. We agree on almost everything we have spoken about. Al will be a great asset. I am looking forward to working with him to make our club better. Jan Hayes, as always, has been a mainstay in keeping the Club financially strong, knowing her as I do; there will not be any change in that. Debbie Miller, as Webmaster, from the start, has done a fantastic job with our web sight. I think we should give her a big pat on the back for what she has done to date. Keep an eye on the sight. I know there will be continued growth and change, this keeps her very busy, I think she has a lot on tap for us still. Last but not least, my best friend Valerie Lee is looking forward to the responsibility of providing us with a history of what went on in each meeting, but mostly keeping me focused on what I should be doing, and how to do it.

Our first meeting together was great as far as I am concerned. 33 0f us had a great lunch at Lomelis in Fullerton. The run went well, no one got lost. Thanks to Paul and Jan Hayes for leading.

Our club has a great membership. We have untapped opportunities to make it even better. Your leadership team should be looked at as a tool to take the club on a course that you, the membership, chart. We are open to suggestions or opportunities that you, the membership, wish to pursue. Feel free to pass on suggestions to any of the Board Members. We will be meeting on a regular basis to make sure we are in tune with what’s best for all of us.

All of the appointed positions have been filled. I think you will be pleased with the team we have put together. There will be a few changes in how our meetings run. The changes will add a little more structure and hopefully, add to your enjoyment.

I am excited about the opportunities ahead of us. Hopefully you are too. I would love to see more participation in current activities, and additional activities in the future. If you have an idea, please share it with Dick Malley, aka, Ned Pepper. I think he is game for anything within reason.

Lastly I would like to thank Jim Cartwright and Lyn Landers for all that they did for our club during their terms in office. Jim added a dimension, new to our meetings, with his knowledge of the Corvette, and Corvette happenings. We are going to continue that in the future.

Lyn’s involvement in organizing club functions and providing us with a new roster format, which includes member’s pictures, was a huge undertaking. I would like to thank you Lyn for all your hard work.

Look forward to an exciting year. I am.

Just a reminder for those of you at the meeting, and a heads up for those of you, not in attendance. Due to our Corvette run to Mount Rushmore next month, Bob Tomlin, past President, will be running the June meeting.

President’s Message

March 2010

Well, it’s almost springtime again, when trees and flowers begin to bloom, the kids are itching for Spring Break and the car show organizers start advertising their upcoming events.  But we in Southwest Corvettes didn’t hibernate all winter or hide away our beautiful cars.  Instead, we’ve kept right on with our club activities as if summer truly does last all year long in Southern California.  Thanks to Dick Malley, our Activities Director, there’s been no shortage of outings for our members to take advantage of.  Our winter outings have included a weekend trip to Cambria, our annual Christmas party, a breakfast run to PJ’s Abbey, a Valentine’s Day old-time bowling adventure and BBQ up in Montrose, a visit to the Corwell and Sheridan Movie Car museum, a weekend trip to Solvang and monthly lunch runs to our favorite eating spots.  I’m sure most clubs would be jealous of how busy we’ve been in the “off season”.

So now we’re looking forward to nicer weather (stop this rain, ok!!!!!) and for the real automotive event-filled half of the year to begin.  We already have plans in place for a special day at Santa Anita Racetrack on March 27th.  Of course our annual banquet is set for April 10th.  The Long Beach Grand Prix is in mid-April and will include a Corvette Corral.  For spring and summer, Mr. Malley is working on a weekend trip to the Gas Lamp district of old San Diego, a day trip out to the real Calico Ghost Town, a Murder Mystery Dinner Show, a day at the Gene Autry Western Museum and the list goes on.

With all that, I’m sure something must appeal to you.  Be sure and join in the fun and camaraderie as much as you can.  This is your club and we all wanna spend time with you.

At the April 10 monthly club meeting, we will once again be holding our club officer election.  Nominations were opened at the February meeting and will also be taken at the March 13th meeting.  The ballot will then be finalized and posted on our website.  Please plan on attending the April meeting so you can participate in the voting process and, of course, join in the banquet later that day.  If you don’t believe you’ll make it to the April 10th meeting, you may print the ballot from our website, mark your vote and mail it to Pat Tomlin.  Pat will be conducting the election and will include any ballots that she receives by mail.

I want to personally thank all those members who volunteer their time and effort to make Southwest Corvettes the active club that it is.  We have a great group of folks who love Corvettes and enjoy coming together under the SWC banner.  I’m looking forward to 2010 and truly believe it’s going to be a fun year for us.

Jim Cartwright
